Chairs

I have made four rocking chairs. I began each chair at a Joe Graham Lenox Workshop in Jefferson, Ohio and completed it in my shop.  The designs are Joe’s creative and stunning evolutions of traditional Windsor designs. We split logs to make the spindles and any part that had to be steam-bent into final form.  Other parts were shaped, mostly with hand tools, from lumber he obtained from local mills. The only chair parts Joe supplied were the pre-turned legs of his design. I owe a great debt to Joe for what he taught me about making chairs, and more importantly about the personal challenges involved in aspiring, learning and persisting to create the best work of which we are capable. Unfortunately, Joe is no longer offering workshops, but my memories and journal entries from the workshops Joe conducted are treasures that nourish my soul and hands.
